1. Unpack into a directory called "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" │
│ 2. Run SPiTFiRE.bat │
│ 3. Accept reg entries │
│ 4. Extract "CIV4_Miniimage_by_Pr1m45.rar" (Its 1GB however XP │
│ users can recover that space, keep reading), select the .mdf │
│ file, right click -> Properties -> Click the Advanced button, │
│ check the option "Compress contents to save disk space", click │
│ apply and the size on the disk should fall dramatically but │
│ still act as a 1GB file. │
│ 5. Mount the mini-image with Daemon Tools v3.47 and run │
│ "virtual-cd-hide.exe" right click the new system tray icon and │
│ click "Hide all virtual drives". │
│ 6. Start the game with CivilizationIV.exe (A pop-up will warn you │
│ that your movie files are not installed correctly just keep │
│ clicking, once its loaded exit the game, use the new shortcut │
│ created "_Civ4Config" find the following lines: │
│ PlayMusic = 1 │
│ Change to: │
│ PlayMusic = 0 │
│ And: │
│ NoMovies = 0 │
│ Change to: │
│ NoMovies = 1 │
│ 7. Step 5 needs to be repeated every time you want to play but the │
│ rest does not. │
│ 8. Start the game again and enjoy!

作為一款經典系列的續集，《Civilization IV》在繼承前作優點的同時也有很多創新。不斷豐富的元素是保持游戲活力的關鍵所在。
相對來說，《Civilization IV》最大的地圖比《Civilization III》略小，不過地圖的信息含量以及內容都會豐富許多。游戲有多種速度，普通模式速度與前作相同，還有快速和史詩游戲速度，具有更快的速度或者更長的長度。
《Civilization IV》得科技樹完全重新設計，不再有必須完成的固定時代。城市和其它建築的升級方式也進行了整合，一些用處不大的建築被取消，加入了新建築。本作會有28種奇跡，還有一些小型奇跡。所有主要建築建成後都有一段實時影片播放。
　游戲中不同國家當然有所區別，但同一國家不同領袖的性格業會對文明的特征造成巨大影響。以法國為例，拿破侖和路易十四掌管下的法國就有很大不同。每個文明會有各自的單位。除了一直都有的英國、法國、德國、西班牙、羅馬、俄羅斯外，還有阿拉伯、中國、日本，乃至阿芝台克等古文明。游戲中總共會有18個勢力可以選擇。
與原作不同，現在各個單位不再有單獨的攻擊和防御值，而是采用了單一的力量評級。游戲中也有多數即時戰略游戲裡強調的兵種相克。戰斗勝利後各個單位會獲得經驗值，積累經驗值升級後會得到特殊能力。每個小兵可以有三個檔次、數個等級的提升余地，這也使得如何保存經驗豐富的戰士成為玩家的首要任務。
　政府系統也有了很大變化，不再只有一組普通政府可以選擇。玩家可以選擇5大類的總共25種公民，根據公民的信仰等特征制定相應的政府結構。 說到公民，其中的佼佼者“偉人”是全新的設定。這些偉人的名字耳熟能詳：莎士比亞、達芬奇、馬可波羅、居裡夫人、巴赫等。每位偉人都有特定的能力，可以立即為你研發一項新的科技。預言家可以發展你宗教信仰，產生神父；藝術家可以使你學會文學；而企業家則可能會讓你擁有銀行。每位偉人都可以在城市裡居住一段時間，從而根據其不同的能力持續推動城市的發展。最終所有的偉人都可以用來使你的文明進入鼎盛的黃金時期，但是想要進入下一次的黃金時期就需要更多的偉人。
與偉人對應，宗教也被引入了游戲。你能研究7種不同的宗教，包括基督教、佛教、印度教和道教等。每種宗教都有自己的優點，你還可以讓傳教士去別的城市和國家宣傳。這意味著你可以把自己的宗教傳播到鄰國，如果你跟他們和睦相處的話。你也能通過它在城市中步下眼線，如果你控制了某種宗教的聖地，你就能在世界上所有信奉這一宗教的城市擁有眼線。
　另外，本作將會非常適合MOD愛好者，你可以隨時調出世界編輯器界面，改變地圖樣貌，通過在界面上簡單的點擊添加各種元素。所有人都可以編輯XML數據文件，添加新單位、公民以及技術。編程水平高的玩家可以添加各種事件代碼，甚至可以編輯自己的動態鏈接庫。
