LibreOffice是OpenOffice的下一代版本，OpenOffice即將結束。同樣是免費開源支持 Windows，Linux，MacOS X (X11)、和 Solaris 等操作系統上執行。LibreOffice包包含6大組件：文字處理（word），計算表（excel），簡報（powerpoint），公式，繪圖，資料庫（access）。
LibreOffice不僅是六大組件的組合，而且與同類產品不同的是，本套件不是獨立軟件模塊形式創建的，從一開始，它就被設計成一個完整的辦公軟件包。

LibreOffice 是 OpenOffice.org 的分支，目標是成為跨平台免費強大的個人辦公軟件。Oracle 收購 OOo 東家 Sun 之後，在 Java 版權問題上一系列激進作為打擊了開發社區的信心。由紅帽、Google、Novell 等大組織牽頭，部分原開發者另立山頭成立了非營利性組織 The Document Fundation 基金會來運營 LibreOffice 項目，意在維護一套能夠完全避開專利大棒的免費辦公軟件。@appinn
LibreOffice 獨立後第一個正式版 3.3 已經發布，少了一些 JAVA 依賴，但功能界面跟 OpenOffice.org 的 3.3 基本沒有區別。LibreOffice 繼承了 OOo 的所有功能和兼容性，甚至組件名稱都完全相同，只是它也繼承了 OOo 的龐大和笨拙。以後，兩者會越走越遠。
LibreOffice﹙發音：/ˌliː.brəˈɒ.fɪs/﹚是一套可與其他主要辦公室軟體相容的套件，可在各種平台上執行。計畫目標是成為一個具開放文件格式﹙ODF﹚支援、獨立於任何廠商之外、真正不受私有版權制約的辦公室套件。它的名字是一個混合詞，第一部分「Libre」在西班牙語和法語中意味著「自由」，第二部分「Office」則為英語「辦公室」單字。它是可供人免費下載、使用和散佈的自由軟體。
LibreOffice 的版本號碼，被設置為與 OpenOffice.org 一致，故初始發布 (2010年) 即為第三版，並不存在第二版、第一版。 LibreOffice 第三版，預設的檔案格式是國際標准化組織的 Open Document Format (.odt, .odp, .ods, .odg)。
最初版本
在2010年9月28日，幾個 OpenOffice.org 的開發成員成立了文件基金會（The Document Foundation），希望接手開發被甲骨文放棄的 OpenOffice.org 計畫，最初文件基金會也邀請甲骨文成為其中的一員，但是甲骨文拒絕提供 OpenOffice.org 的品牌給文件基金會使用，隨後要求參與文件基金會的成員退出 OpenOffice.org 的開發社群[2]，因為甲骨文認為參與文件基金會和公司的利益發生衝突。
隨後 OpenOffice.org 其中一個分支 Go-oo 決定支持LibreOffice，宣佈停止開發[3]，並且把開發成果合並到LibreOffice 中。
最終，隨著開發者轉移到 LibreOffice 上，甲骨文宣佈停止 OpenOffice.org 的商業支援。2011年6月，Oracle宣布將OpenOffice.org捐贈給Apache軟體基金會，未來OpenOffice.org的發展將由Apache軟體基金會主導。
