p53 was discovered independently by several researchers* in 1979 as a cellular protein that forms a complex with the SV40 large T protein. The 25
years that have passed since this discovery represent an extraordinary
scientific journey with a major impact on molecular biology and cancer
research. p53 has changed face from obscure oncogene to key tumor
suppressor gene with potentially great clinical impact. Yet the p53 field has
not followed a straight course. In retrospect, it is possible to discern at least
three phases of p53 research during the first 25 years.
